Performance levels increased as circumstances became better and there was clean surf of at least two feet. Before the tournament was suspended due to onshore winds, the Round of 48 and six Heats of the Round of 32 had already been completed.

Joh Azuchi (JPN), who recently placed in the semifinals of the Bonsoy Chiba Ichinomiya Open in Japan, carried over his form into Heat 1 of the Round of 32 and recorded the greatest two-wave total of the competition thus far.

His razor-sharp frontside snaps, which were a great fit for the sluggish right-handers of Mahabalipuram Beach, contributed to Azuchi’s 14.15 combination (out of a possible 20). With just minutes left, Azuchi, who was last with eight minutes remaining, managed to locate his two goals.

Azuchi remarked, “I tried to catch as many waves as I could from the beginning of the heat but I had a hard time catching good waves.”

“I was a little uncertain about whether I could pull it off, but in the end, I managed to obtain two respectable scores. I wasn’t expecting to obtain such high marks, but I knew they would be sufficient to advance me to the Round of 16. I adore India, particularly the cuisine. There is no trouble obtaining curry and naan here, which is my favorite food. I’ve been having a wonderful time in India,” he said.

The Japanese team of Raiha Onou and Daiki Tanaka appeared strong and advanced to the Round of 16 with scores in the middle range. While Dhany Widianto (INA) won his heat with the move of the day, a spectacular lay-back snap that was enough to carry him over the finish line, the Swedish representative Kian Martin (SWE) only displayed sparks.

Sivaraj Babu (IND), Ajeesh Ali (IND), and Kishore Kumar (IND), athletes from India, all advanced through their Round of 48 heats earlier in the day after putting in strong efforts. Ali and Kumar made history in the first WSL tournament on Indian Shores, but unfortunately for the local supporters, they were ousted in the Round of 32. Nonetheless, they represented their nation well.

When the competition restarts, Babu will take part in the last heat of the Round of 32.
